Gemini in Gmail turns threads, drafts, replies and Workspace context into assistance that reduces repetitive work while keeping people in control.
My role

Why this problem mattered
The problem became personal through conversations with small-business owners who wore every hat. An inbox should not be the reason someone misses a child’s soccer game or spends the evening checking a phone. I wanted AI to carry more of the repetitive work so people could return to the craft and people they care about.
Overview
Gemini in Gmail expanded AI assistance from short suggestions into a connected set of experiences for understanding, writing and acting on email. Public product materials show summaries, Help me write, Contextual Smart Reply, inbox Q&A and responses that reference Google Drive files.
The user problem
Email work is fragmented across long threads, buried facts, repetitive drafting and context stored in other tools. The product challenge was to reduce that work without taking away the user’s judgment, tone or final control over what gets sent.
What the team shipped
Publicly released experiences include one-click thread summaries, more detailed summaries and action items in the side panel, Help me write for drafts and replies, Contextual Smart Reply, inbox search and Q&A, draft refinement, and the ability to reference a specific Drive file in a response.
Product decisions
The public product pattern is progressive assistance inside familiar Gmail surfaces: offer context before generation, provide a useful first draft, let people inspect and edit it, and bring relevant Workspace information into the flow without requiring a separate tool.
Publicly supportable impact
Google’s public Gmail page shows the capabilities available on desktop and mobile for business and personal use. Independent coverage at The Verge highlighted more personalized smart replies that could use Gmail and Drive context. No private adoption or business metrics are included here.
Lessons
The strongest AI email experiences preserve agency. Users need clear context, editable output, sensible boundaries and a fast path back to normal email when the model is not helpful.
